The broth for kalguksu is usually only made with anchovies, kelp and shellfish but you should ask in case other meats are used in it. Located in a small alley very near to Exit 5 of Hoehyeon Station, the alley is filled with many stalls serving the same kalguksu menu and barley rice bibimbap (boribap). These dishes also come with a free serving of bibim naengmyeon. The price for kalguksu is only around 4,500 KRW so not only they are filling, but cheap too :) (source 1, source 2)

Tired of only eating kebab when going shopping at Namdaemun Market? How about a proper meal with spicy fish stew, rice and vegetable side dishes? Make your way to the Galchi Jorim Alley then.

This alley is one of two famous food alleys in Namdaemun. Hidden behind shop fronts, making your way to this alley is half the challenge. The other half? Enduring the spiciness of this dish and taking out the many small bones on the fish. As always check out the sources for pictures and more descriptions! (source 1, source 2)

When you've reached here, walk straight until you find many restaurants cooking their galchi jorim outside their doors.

UPDATE: I found out that alcohol may be used in the preparation of this dish from this article. Please ask first whether they used alcohol before ordering.

Distance from Subway Station: 311 meters (Exit 6)
District (gu): Dongdaemun-gu
GPS: 37.577056,127.030735 ↗

Description:

One of the most remarkable things about South Korea's food culture is the existence of many specialty food alleys. When a restaurant becomes popular for a particular dish, other restaurants open in the surrounding area serving the same dish. Featured here is an alley specializing in spicy stir-fried baby octopus (jjukkumi bokkeum). Baby octopuses that has been marinated in spicy chilli paste will be brought to customers' tables to be cooked. This dish is apparently very spicy, so only those who dare should try :)
Some restaurants in this alley have the option of serving the dish with samgyeopsal (pork's belly meat), but the restaurant shown below (Mokpojib Na Jeong-sun Halmae Jjukkumi / 나정순할매쭈꾸미) only serves jjukkumi bokkeum. So for Muslim travellers, do go to this one!

Description:

One of Korea's most famous street foods is tteokbokki. It is usually eaten as snack that can conveniently be eaten while walking. However in one street tteokbokki is considered as a proper, large meal to be shared. In Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town, there are many restaurants serving this recipe. Served in a metal wok, customers are supposed to cook their own tteokbokki with the prepared ingredients. In addition to the usual rice cakes in chilli paste, tteokbokki here is also served with ramyeon noodle, fish cakes, fried mandus, boiled eggs and also onions and cabbages. Some restaurants also have seafood tteokbokki option.

Most of the restaurants in this street are open 24-hours, so you can get your spicy rice cake fix anytime you want. (source 1, source 2)

NOTE: Please read the comment by the reader "N" below, and make your own decision. I am not endorsing any restaurant in this blog (and of course I am not guaranteeing that every restaurants listed is totally halal). The listing is meant as a guide. Every final decision should be yours.
