Yang Good Korean BBQ Lamb Restaurant

Category: Restaurant - Halal Restaurant
Nearest Subway Station: Yeoksam Station (Line 2)
Distance from Subway Station: 289 meters (Exit 6)
District (gu): Gangnam-gu
GPS: 37.502177,127.034696

It is really unfortunate that there are not many choices for halal Korean food in Seoul. There is Murree Restaurant in Itaewon... and.... ? Well there are also many seafood options but I am sure we all agree that we. must. have. meat.

Fear not! You can have your sizzling, smoking grilled BBQ meat at this restaurant. They use lamb meat imported from Australia so they are Halal. Yeay! Prepare to spend a ~little~ bit extra though. But I'm sure the experience will be well worth it. Price is around 11,000 KRW - 22,000 KRW and the restaurant is open from 3 PM until late. (source 1, source 2)

Going to Everland by Subway

There's a new LRT line that was recently opened in Yongin. The Everline LRT is connected to Giheung Station and its last station is Jeondae - Everland. Which is just next to the free shuttle bus to Everland. So instead of taking the bus #5002 from Gangnam Station, you can actually take the subway all the way through.

Here is how to do it from Myeongdong Station:
  • Take train to Chungmuro Station
  • Transfer to Line 3 and take train to Yangjae Station
  • Transfer to Shinbundang Line and take train to Jeongja
  • Transfer to Bundang Line and take train to Giheung
  • Transfer to Everline and take train to Jeondae - Everland
It costs about 3,950 KRW and is around 1 hour 45 minutes for the whole trip. So it might actually be faster (and cheaper) if you take the bus after all. But it is good to have another option. Happy trying!

Collaboration with Soul Scarves: Giveaway!

Hello darling readers. If you haven't noticed, Muslim Backpackers Seoul now have a sister site. *points to the right side of the blog*. Yes, we have branched out! Soul Scarves is an online store selling scarves and shawls for Muslim hijab or as accessory to splash up your outfits. The store is still very new, so we don't have much traffic yet. So, if you know of anyone who loves printed scarves please point them to our store's way. The designs are absolutely beautiful if I may say so myself. Hehe.

So to celebrate the launching of Soul Scarves (see how Soul sounds totally like Seoul? not so subtle hinting that we are related here), the store is doing a special giveaway exclusive for Muslim Backpackers Seoul readers! Yeayyy :D The first four readers to buy any scarf at Soul Scarves will receive 1 (one) piece of T-Money card worth 2,500 KRW. You only have to answer this very simple question:

Where is Seoul Central Mosque located?

Put down your answer in the Promotion Code field on the Order Form, and that's it! You will be notified by e-mail if you've won the card.

Please give the same amount of love to Soul Scarves that you've given this site. 감사합니다 and we hope to see you there! ♥

Travel Planning Service - Puan Khadijah's Testimonial

Puan Khadijah and her husband visited South Korea to attend a conference in Phoenix Park. While there she took the chance to travel Seoul too. She subscribed to the travel planning service to help with her planning. Here is her testimonial for the service:
Although South Korea is very excellent in its tourism sector, this country still very much loves its own language that you may not get all info conveniently if you don't know their language. Adding to the fact, you are also a muslim and the place to perform solah and halal food becomes your priority. Hence there are only 2 ways to move about conveniently in Korea: (1) Get a tourist guide who understand the needs of muslim or (2) Do the proper planning.

I decided to choose (2) because I was in a shoestring budget. But I also do not know about places in Korea. There are many websites which provide a lot of info, however you won't have time to study all them!

Here's where the travel planning service becomes handy and necessary. Alhamdulillah I am delighted to have used Fadzlin's service. She was informative, she handled my questioned well, and was patient too with a customer like me. With Fadzlin's very detailed and organized planning service, I instantly knew about how much I need to spend on food and transportation, and the map sketch were very handy as many online maps presents less detail and are in Korean language.

So many thanks Fadzlin and may Allah bless you in your undertakings :-) - Puan Khadijah, Malaysia

Thank you Puan Khadijah for your very generous review of the service. I appreciate it very much. For my other readers' information, she has a blog that chronicled her travel to South Korea (and also her coming travel plans). She has shared a lot of useful information so do visit her site.

If you are worried on how to get your ways in Seoul for your holiday, worry no more. Let me do your planning for you. Sign up now :)

Distance from Subway Station: 642 meters (Exit 2)
District (gu): Yongsan-gu
GPS: 37.541457,126.987066

When it comes to Halal restaurants in a non-Muslim majority country like South Korea sometimes we have to do some allowances - food are either expensive, taste can be better or the locations somewhere not conveniently reached. Casablanca Sandwicherie is actually only guilty the last crime: not being a few steps away from the nearest subway station. But if the numerous reviews of how good their sandwiches are to be believed, I'll gladly walk the 642 meters from Noksapyeong station to their door (or maybe take a taxi).

Casablanca Sandwicherie serves a few type of sandwiches: vegetarian, Moroccan chicken, omelette, shrimp and lamb. Sandwich starts from only 4,000 KRW. The restaurant is open from 5 PM everyday except on Monday. (source 1, source 2, source 3)

Travel Planning Service - Puan Hani's Testimonial

I want to thank Puan Hani who is kindly sharing her pictures and testimonial of the Travel Planning Service. She subscribed to the service for her trip to Seoul in January. Of the service, this is what she has to say:
Tak sangka sangat mudah untuk meneroka Korea dengan pengangkutan awam ke tempat-tempat yang menarik. Perkhidmatan yang memuaskan. - Puan Hani, Malaysia.

No wonder the director of Winter Sonata chose Nami Island as the filming location. Look at how beautiful it is in winter. Just the right place for a vacation for two.

South Korea is a beautiful country for that much deserved break for you and your other half. If you are planning to come here and do not want your privacy to be disturbed by tour agent or members of tour group how about letting me plan for your holiday and go everywhere just the two of you instead? Namsan Tower - How to Get There by Bus

Category: Attraction - Nature
Nearest Subway Station: Myeongdong (Line 4)
Distance from Subway Station: 41 meters (Exit 2)
District (gu): Jung-gu
GPS: 37.560823,126.986621
Description:

Previously this site shows how to get to Namsan Park and Tower by taking the cable car. However the journey to the cable car station itself is challenging with the distance and being a bit hilly. Of course the price is also expensive with the current posted price being 8,000 KRW for a round trip and 6,000 KRW one way. Waiting time can be long too if it is a public holiday in South Korea.

Luckily you can also take a bus up and down the Namsan Mountain. Namsan Mountain is served by yellow (circular) buses. There are three different buses that go up: Namsan 02, Namsan 03 and Namsan 05. Each bus serves different routes in Seoul.

This entry shows how to take the bus Namsan 05 from a bus stop in Myeongdong Station. The bus stop is just a few steps from the Exit 2 of Myeongdong Station. The bus stop is next to Prince Hotel.

Even though the bus category is Yellow Bus, the Seoul government has changed most of the buses going up Namsan Mountain to the environmentally friendly electric buses that look like this:

Your bus number is 05 though. Don't take the wrong one from Namsan Mountain!
Or the old bus may come first. Don't snub this bus! It goes the same route. :)

Bus fare is only 850 KRW when using T-Money. Journey will take around 30 minutes and the bus interval is every 18 minutes. Because it is a circular line, you can also take the same bus from Namsan Mountain to this Myeongdong bus stop back.

Cheongchun Cat Cafe

Category: Attraction - Other
Nearest Subway Station: Hongik University Station (Line 2, AREX)
Distance from Subway Station: 616 meters (Exit 9)
District (gu): Mapo-gu
GPS: 37.552998,126.923114
Description:

One of the most ubiquitous sights in Seoul is the many coffee houses making business in this town. You have the major franchises like Starbucks and also many independent and unique coffee houses. Coffee houses that have unique theme are also numerous in Seoul like the Hello Kitty Coffee House featured before. But this time how about something less cartoonish and more I-will-leave-my-furs-on-your-clothes variant?

Cheongchun Cat Cafe / YCat Cafe (previously also known as Gio Cat Cafe) is a coffee house where the main spotlight is not on their brews of Caramel Macchiatto or Espresso, but the many cats it houses! Pay an entrance fee and you'll get a choice of drinks and allocation of table. Then you can do your best to tempt these furry buddies to get into your lap, pet and play with them. They even have a "cat menu" that showcases the many different breeds of cats they have. Check the sources for more info (and a video) (source 1, source 2, source 3)

Korean Folk Village

Category: Attraction - One Day Visit
Nearest Subway Station: -
Distance from Subway Station: -
District (gu): -
GPS: 37.259247,127.118951
Description:

Korean Folk Village is a cultural village established to preserve the traditional houses, culture and customs of Korea's Joseon period. The village consists of relocated hanok houses, buildings and artifacts that depicts the lifestyle of the Joseon period. This village was used as a filming location for many Korean dramas like Jewel in the Palace, Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Moon Embracing the Sun.

Aerial view of Korean Folk Village

Similiar to Everland, there are also multiple ways to get to Korean Folk Village in Yongin. This entry is how to get to Korean Folk Village by taking a bus in Gangnam. The bus stop for Korean Folk Village is the exact bus stop for taking the bus to Everland. So if you want the map and walking directions to the bus stop you can refer this entry.

The bus to take is 5001-1 (red bus). Journey is around 1 hour and ticket costs 2,000 KRW using T-Money. First bus from Gangnam Station is at 6.30 AM and the last bus heading back to Gangnam Station is at 12.20 AM. Bus interval is every 12 minutes.

Now, the tricky part is knowing where to get off. You can always tell the driver ahjusshi to let you know once you've arrived:
한국 민속촌에 도착하면 말씀해 주세요
han guk min sok chon eh  do chak ha myeon  mal sseum hae  ju se yo
Please tell me when we arrive at Korean Folk Village
You can also familiarize yourself with the bus stop / location you should get off. I am embedding the Daum Map Road View of the bus stop in Korean Folk Village so you can get.. familiarized.

Bus from Seoul will let you off at this bus stop:

Hey look, that bus!
From the bus stop you will need to cross the road, cross the parking lot and walk a little bit more to reach the entrance of Korean Folk Village. Refer Google Map below for more accurate locations.

To get back to Seoul, wait at the bus stop below, which is just opposite the bus stop where you disembarked.

Korean Folk Village has a Muslim prayer room as stated in the e-book "A Slim Destination for Muslim Travelers". You need to go to the ticket office and ask for the availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before you ask any question, please check if there's already an entry about it in the Site Map and in the list of questions below. If your question is not in this list, feel free to contact me.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the cherry blossoms season in Seoul?
Spring in Seoul starts from end of March until early May. However cherry blossoms bloom early in April and the dates vary each year. Refer to KTO Website for specific dates for every year.

2. Can I do a day trip to Nami Island?
Absolutely! Nami Island is only a 90 minutes trip from Seoul. If you take the Nami Island Shuttle Bus, you'll be back in Seoul around 5.30 PM.

3. Can I do a day trip to Mount Sorak?
Also feasible. Journey by Express bus to Sokcho city where Mount Sorak is located takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. If you take the earliest bus around 6 AM you'll arrive there with plenty of time to take the cable car at Mount Sorak, explore around and then take the express bus back to Seoul. However if you plan to do hiking, it is better to stay overnight there.

4. Is Seoul a safe city? I am backpacking alone / only with female friends.
Yes, Seoul is one of the most safest cities in the world. At night there might be some drunks but as long as you don't directly go towards them you'll be safe. Just use some common sense and don't go using some dark lanes/provoke anyone.

5. Can I bring frozen / cooked foods into South Korea?
Yes. During our trip we actually brought frozen chicken drummets, frozen rendang, cooked mini ketupats..among other dried foods. I emailed the KTO office regarding this and they checked with Korea Food & Drug Administration. Apparently there is no exact rules for individual food so it is okay to bring them in.

6. Is the Seoul subway easy to use?
Subway in Seoul is really extensive and can literally take you everywhere in Seoul (and beyond). Station names are announced in English, and there are many English signs inside the subway stations. The only thing that may be confusing is how you may have to make transfers to other lines. But you can download subway apps that can help you with this.

7. I saw in Korean dramas that they don't pay using cash for public transportation?
Yes, Koreans usually use the transportation card: T-Money. Available in almost every convenience store, the card only costs 2,500 KRW. I highly suggest getting this card. You'll get discounted for each ride (100 KRW). But even if you don't use it 25 times to get the card's worth back, the convenience and ease-of-use makes the investment more than worth it.

8. What to do if I am lost?
Approach any Korean and ask! Most young Koreans can understand English so they are your best bet. If you can't find anyone who knows the direction of where you are heading, ask for the nearest subway station. Also bring the Korean address and telephone number of the place you are staying so you can always hail a taxi and ask them to take you back to your lodging.

9. I need someone to help me translate on-the-go when I am in Seoul, who should I call?
You can call the KTO 24 Hour Travel Hotline at 1330 (02-1330 if calling from mobile phone) or Seoul Call Center at 120 (02-120 from mobile phone). Be informed that Seoul Call Center only operates from 9AM to 5 PM only.

10. What is the weather in Seoul during January / April / ______ ?
You can easily check the weather in Seoul from this page here. Just put in the months where you want to see the weather.

11. I want to book a hotel room at a place where it is easiest to get halal food. Which area should I search?
Itaewon. The road leading to Seoul Central Mosque is filled with halal restaurants, butchers and supermarkets. Use room booking site (Agoda for example) and search for Itaewon.

12. Is (insert restaurant name) halal?
If I don't tag it as halal, use your own precautions. Also I can't possibly know what kind of cooking oil they use or whether they separate their utensils etc. Please use your own wisdom to judge.

13. Can you tell me restaurants that I can go in (insert district name) area?
Please use the district categories to check, or you can also use the Search by Two Categories feature.

14. How about adding other type of restaurants? I am bored with kebab and Indian food
South Korea is not a Muslim majority country, we can't expect various kind of permissible food like what we have in our own country. However I do think I've added a lot of choices especially if you are willing to test the Seafood and Vegetarian restaurants.

15. Really? Where are these restaurants you talk about?
Site Map is the place to go. Or check the categories.

16. What is the best preparation I can do before I go to South Korea?
Learn Hangul. It is very easy, you can actually learn it in one day. If you have an iPhone, try searching for Hangul Tap application at the App Store. Also learn some survival phrases. There are apps for basic Korean too, check the Useful Smartphone Apps tips.

17. Is your Travel Planning Service open to Malaysians only?
The service is open to all readers of this site! International customers will be issued invoice through PayPal. Read customers' testimonials here.

New Site Feature: Search by Two Categories

I did a simple HTML coding that can help you search by combining two different categories. It means you can match entries by union of two categories/labels/tags.

For example if you are looking for any restaurant near Dongdaemun Station, you can choose "category: restaurant" for Category 1 and "station: dongdaemun" for Category 2. The search button will bring you to a Google result page with the list of entries that have both the above conditions.

The rest.. not so much. LOL.

Combining two unrelated categories (example prayer place and restaurant) will not bring out proper results. Additionally, the entries that satisfy both conditions may only be the top two or three results followed by some unrelated ones. However I hope this tool will still be useful.

If there's a bug, or you find some missing categories, please inform me by commenting below. Have fun searching!
