Everland

Category: Attraction - One Day Visit
Nearest Subway Station: -
Distance from Subway Station: -
District (gu): -
Description:

I don't usually make entry on attraction outside of Seoul, but today I am excited because I discovered that Naver Map have Street View (or whatever Naver call it is) of Everland! Korea why so amazing? I described on how to get here on a previous entry so on this entry I will just focus on ticketing, food and where to pray.

Ticketing
Everland always have discounts going on for foreigners. You need to go to their website and print out the coupon. Bring the coupon together with your passport and when you arrive at the ticketing place skip the lines of people queuing for regular tickets and find the "Group Ticket Office". Regular ticket booths can't sell you the discounted tickets so make sure you go to this office. From the current promotion going on instead of 40,000 KRW for one day pass you'll get a discount of 8,000 KRW and only have to pay 32,000 KRW.

Food
There is no specific "halal" restaurants in Everland but you can go and buy the shrimp burger from their restaurants. Shown below is "Burger Cafe Europe" which is in the same area (European Adventure) of the prayer room in Everland.

Prayer Room
Everland have kindly provided a prayer room for the usage of Muslim visitors. You won't know it is a prayer room from the outside though. The room is located under the same building as Mystery Mansion. From the pictures going on the internet (especially Miss Zarina's blog), they don't provide water pipe, only a sink so I would recommend bringing your own small spray bottle to take wudu'. And also this is a unisex prayer room and you will have to bring your own prayer clothes.

I hope the info in this entry and the previous one will help those who are planning to go to Everland on their own. Have fun!

District (gu): Yongsan-gu
GPS: 37.533109,126.996749

I don't normally post about restaurants in Itaewon because you are frankly spoiled for choice here - there are so many halal restaurants on the way to the Seoul Mosque and the surrounding area.

However I've been receiving questions about restaurants serving halal Korean food and while previously I don't know of any, a reader told me that Murree Restaurant has started having Korean dishes in their menu. So if you want to try halal bulgogi or kalbi make your way to this restaurant. Located on the way to the mosque, you really won't miss it. (source 1, source 2)

You don't need to book or buy the ticket first before boarding the bus. Just tap your T-Money card or pay by cash to the driver. Because this is a public bus, it can get crowded though so make sure you make your way early in the morning.

The bus will stop at a terminal near Everland and from there you can take the free shuttle bus provided by Everland. Take the same bus to get back to Seoul but ask first that the bus is going to Gangnam and not Myeongji University. Journey from Gangnam to Everland is around 1 hour and the bus fare is 2,000 KRW using T-Money and 2,100 by cash. The first bus starts at 5:50 AM and last bus departs at 10:20 PM with each interval at around 11 minutes. (source)

District (gu): Gangnam-gu
GPS: 37.518423,127.023248

"Gangnam Style" song is crazily popular now. "Gangnam" is the name of an upscale district in Seoul, full with large corporation offices and high-end shops, while "oppa" is the word used for a female to call a close older male. "Oppa Gangnam style" is basically "Hey girl, I've got the high class style" (though the music video really doesn't translate the lyrics).

Garosu-gil is one of the numerous uptrend streets in Gangnam. It is filled with boutiques by Korean designers, interior stores, book and art shops and also beautifully designed cafes. It is not as intimidating as Cheongdam-dong, another district in Gangnam with luxury boutiques abound and some even say Garosu-gil is comparable to European streets' charms. The street is lined up with ginkgo trees (hence the name) and in autumn their yellow leaves make the street really beautiful. A romantic place to be I must say :) (source 1, source 2)

One of the most remarkable things about South Korea's food culture is the existence of many specialty food alleys. When a restaurant becomes popular for a particular dish, other restaurants open in the surrounding area serving the same dish. Featured here is an alley specializing in spicy stir-fried baby octopus (jjukkumi bokkeum). Baby octopuses that has been marinated in spicy chilli paste will be brought to customers' tables to be cooked. This dish is apparently very spicy, so only those who dare should try :)

Some restaurants in this alley have the option of serving the dish with samgyeopsal (pork's belly meat), but the restaurant shown below (Mokpojib Na Jeong-sun Halmae Jjukkumi / 나정순할매쭈꾸미) only serves jjukkumi bokkeum. So for Muslim travellers, do go to this one! (source 1, source 2)

However in one street tteokbokki is considered as a proper, large meal to be shared. In Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town, there are many restaurants serving this recipe. Served in a metal wok, customers are supposed to cook their own tteokbokki with the prepared ingredients. In addition to the usual rice cakes in chilli paste, tteokbokki here is also served with ramyeon noodle, fish cakes, fried mandus, boiled eggs and also onions and cabbages. Some restaurants also have seafood tteokbokki option.

Most of the restaurants in this street are open 24-hours, so you can get your spicy rice cake fix anytime you want. (source 1, source 2)

Hostels and Guesthouses in Mapo-gu

Also Check:

Mapo-gu is the district in Seoul with a large concentration of hostels and affordable guesthouses in Seoul. Backpackers who are looking to experience living in dorms, making new friends or most importantly are on a tight budget will do well to start looking for accommodation around this area.

Mapo-gu, from KTO Tourist Map
While Mapo-gu is not in the area of downtown Seoul and this may be a deciding factor for most travellers looking for a place, the district is not without its own advantages:
  1. Some have cheaper room rates as compared to downtown Seoul
  2. Cheaper foods because of the many universities, catering to students' needs
  3. Nearer to Incheon Airport: taxi, AREX and airport bus cost less
Hongik University and Sinchon subway stations in Mapo serve the subway line 2, the only circular line in Seoul. Travel time to Myeongdong (via Euljiro 1-ga station) takes only 12 minutes.

The price listed below are for rooms with double occupancy, and for a single bed in a dorm. Not all these places have female only dorms so you need to check their sites to confirm.

A lot of thanks to our friends at Cari Forum, who listed most of the places pinned here.

Travelling from Incheon Airport to Seoul

You have touched down! Getting down from the airplane, taking your luggage from the carousel, showing your passport to the immigration officer and are finally out of that gate! Now how to get to Seoul?

There are three options on getting to Seoul:

1. Using AREX

AREX is a railway line that connects Incheon Airport to Seoul. It operates ten stations out of which six are connected to the subway lines.

source: arex.or.kr

There are two types of trains that AREX operate, trains that stop at every station (commuter trains) and express trains that go directly to Seoul Station. The express trains cost more than the normal one.

  • Commuter AREX: Incheon - Seoul Station: 3,850 KRW / 53 minutes
  • Express AREX: Incheon - Seoul Station: 13,800 KRW / 43 minutes

It is extremely cheap to go by AREX especially if you take the commuter AREX. However this option is only suitable if you are not carrying heavy luggage with you. It is hard to find elevator for exits in subway stations so you will have to be prepared to carry your luggage on escalators and stairs. It is the perfect choice however to backpackers who would like to save money (and spend it somewhere else).

To take AREX, make your way to the Transportation Center on B1 Floor. There are signs to guide you towards this building. Then you should buy ticket to the station that is closest to your booked accommodation. Please take note of the transfer station(s) that you may have to go through to get to your intended station.

Journey from Airport - Myeongdong, transfer at Seoul Station
2. Using Airport Limousine Bus

This is a more comfortable option compared to taking AREX but is still an affordable one. Airport bus goes to various parts of Seoul. There are two types of buses, the standard limousine bus that goes to a lot more stations and deluxe bus that makes its stops mostly at major hotels in Seoul and have more spacious seats.

  • Standard Limousine Bus: Incheon - Myeongdong (Sejong Hotel): 10,000 KRW
  • Deluxe Limousine Bus: Incheon - Myeongdong (Sejong Hotel): 14,000 KRW

If you are carrying heavy luggage this is a good option for you. You can put your luggage in the luggage compartment and they will stick a number to the bag and give a stub to you or you can take it with you on the bus. Ticket can be bought either at their ticketing counter or from the bus' driver when boarding the bus.

Platform 3B-6B and 10A-13A for buses to Seoul

3. Using Taxi

If you'd rather have someone else find your accommodation for you, send you straight to the doorstep and just want to relax and enjoy the scenery of Seoul after the long flight, you can opt to take a taxi.

A. Hail the taxi

Platform 6C for taxis to Seoul

You can go to the taxi platform (6C for Seoul Taxi) at the airport and take a taxi there. The basic rate for normal taxi is 2,400 KRW for the first 2km and it increases by 100 KRW per 144 meters. You are also expected to pay for the toll fare of around 7,400 KRW. The estimated time and fare for areas in Seoul taken from Incheon International Airport Website is as below:

However if there is traffic jam the fare can be higher. Also make sure that you take the normal taxi (white/silver or orange) and not the deluxe taxi (black) because the rates are different. Take note too that the meter is running when the journey starts.

B. Book the taxi

Instead of hailing for taxi at the airport taxi platform, you can also book for your taxi beforehand. The driver will then wait for you in front of the arrival hall with your name sign.

This is a service provided by "International Taxi" and it charges a flat-rate for journey to Seoul according to locations.

Myeongdong is B Zone: 65,000 KRW
Booking for International Taxi can be done through their website here. Their drivers mostly speak passable English so you can carry conversation with them throughout the long journey to Seoul.

While taxi is the most expensive option out of the three, it can be feasible if you are in a large group so you can split the fare. If you are afraid of getting lost finding your accommodation and have elderly or very young children in your group taxi is also probably the best choice. Good luck!
